World Cup winner, Franz Beckenbauer, dies aged 78

Nicknamed “Der Kaiser” (The Emperor), Beckenbauer was instrumental in leading and revolutionising Germany to their World Cup win in 1974 while gaining 103 appearances for them in the process. He went on to repeat that success 16 years later, when he managed Germany to their World Cup win in Italy.

His defensive midfield role as now known as a “Libero” can be seen to be replicated by players such as Declan Rice and John Stones in many of Europe’s top teams today. It was with that Libero role that he lead European giants Bayern Munich to three European Cups in the 70’s.

Beckenbauer was named European Footballer of the Year two times, and played in two European Titles and three World Cups – including the victorious 1972 and 1974 groups separately.
He moved to New York Cosmos in 1977 and afterward got back to Germany for a two-year spell with Hamburg in 1980, preceding getting back to New York in 1983.

His family came out on Monday and said: “It is with deep sadness that we inform you that my husband and our father Franz Beckenbauer fell asleep peacefully yesterday, surrounded by his family. We ask that you mourn in silence and refrain from asking any questions.”

Thoughts and grievances were widespread throughout the football community with Bayern Munich, Bundesliga, Gary Lineker, Lionel Messi the standouts among a sea of thoughts and prayers online.

The Bayern hierarchy were quick to pay tributes as well, notably Herbert Hainer, the club president said: “There are no words to express how great our grief is, and the gap that Franz Beckenbauer leaves behind. As a player, he brought a sense of effortlessness, elegance and magic to the pitch. Franz Beckenbauer brought the glamour. Even after his playing career, he left an indelible mark on FC Bayern and football, and his legacy cannot be measured in titles. The FC Bayern family is eternally grateful to him, and I personally mourn the loss of a friend.”

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Bayern’s former CEO, said: “I am deeply shocked. Franz Beckenbauer rewrote the history of German football and left a lasting mark on it. He was my captain at FC Bayern, my coach with the national team, our president at Bayern – and in all these roles he was not only successful but unique. As a person, he impressed with his great respect for all people, because everyone was equal in Franz’s eyes. German football has lost the greatest figure in its history. We will miss him more than sorely. Thank you for everything, dear Franz.”
