National badminton player Lee Chong Wei has confirmed that he will not take part in the upcoming Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Kuala Lumpur because of other commitments.
The world number one athlete will focus his efforts on the World Championships in August.
According to Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) president Datuk Seri Norza Zakaria, the tournament in August is priority number one because Lee Chong Wei is yet to win it.
“I can confirm that Chong Wei will travel to Glasgow because that is our main priority. We need to give others the chance to prove themselves,” he said as quoted by Berita Harian.
“I believe players such as Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin must be given the chance as well.
On top of that, Norza Zakaria believes that the women’s team must be up for the challenge.
“Thailand women’s shuttler Ratchanok Intanon has decided to travel to Scotland for the upcoming World Championship, so our women’s team must be extremely prepared.
“We will set our targets for the SEA Games within this week,” Norza Zakaria concluded.
The World Championships will take place at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow, Scotland from August 21-27, whereas the SEA Games will take place in Kuala Lumpur from August 19-30.
