Cheick Tiote, who spent seven seasons with Newcastle United, has died of a suspected heart attack during a training session with China League One side Beijing Enterprises yesterday.
The Ivory Coast midfielder collapsed at his club’s training ground and died in the hospital.
“This is upsetting news. I am here to tell you that my client, Cheick Tiote, passed away after collapsing during a training session,” his agent Emanuele Palladino said to Sky Sports.
Cheick Tiote began his professional career with Belgian club Anderlecht at the age of 18 before making a name for himself at Dutch Eredivisie side Twente three years later.
Newcastle United signed Cheick Tiote for £3.5m in 2010 and he has played over 150 matches for The Magpies. He is known for his famous 25-yard volley in Newcastle United’s historical 4-4 comeback against Arsenal, which was to be his only goal for the club.
Rest in peace, Cheick Tiote.
