Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) defender Aidil Zafuan Abdul Razal has expressed his eagerness to don the Harimau Malaya jersey once again after ‘retiring’ from the national team last June.
Aidil and three other Southern Tigers players, Safiq Rahim, Amirulhadi Zainal and S. Kunanlan were listed in the 26-man squad for the Asian Cup qualifier against Lebanon on June 13.
All four of the players were involved in one of the biggest controversies in 2016 when they suddenly announced to the country that they will be retiring from the national team.
However, they were keen on representing the country once again right after Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim was elected as the new president of Football Association of Malaysia (FAM).
“I honestly missed playing for the national team,” Aidil said as quoted by Utusan Malaysia.
“I am completely honoured to be recalled to wear the Harimau Malaya jersey and I will do my best and show my commitment for the country if I am to play in any of the matches.
“We are excited to work with the new coach and the new players,” he concluded.
The ex-national team vice captain also heaped praise on Kedah’s Khairul Helmi Johari and vows to fight for his place in the team due to many options in the centre-back department.
The players and Nelo Vingada will meet during the first training session in Johor on May 29.
