Football

Can you guess which is the oldest football club in the world?

Football is the no.1 sport in the world

Football is the most loved and played sport in the world. And we didn’t just make that up because of our unconditional love for the sport.

We looked a few different sites, and they all rate football, or in some cases, soccer, as the most popular sport in the world.

It’s quite easy to understand why. Dating all the way back to the 1800s, football is a game that can be played anywhere, anytime, with pretty much anything.

No goal post? We use our slippers. No football? Scrunch up the old newspaper you find at home, and voila! All you need is an empty space outside, really. And if it rains? Even better.

How far back does football go?

The official football association was first formed in 1863 with an official set of rules and regulations. Only after that, football clubs started forming all around the world. And today, all of us have out favourite football teams and we die defending their honour.

But that brings us back to the question, do you know which is the oldest and the first football club ever formed?

Let us give you a hint: it’s from England (duh).

It’s Sheffield Football Club, formed on the 24th of October, 1857.

Sheffield FC has since played a huge role in shaping modern football and its game play.

Sheffield’s founding fathers, Nathaniel Creswick and William Prest were the ones who wrote the first ever rule book for football, which includes corner kicks, free kicks, throw-ins, and other rules that have evolved with time.

Sheffield FC now play in the Northern Premier League, Division One South, at level 8 of the English football league.

Until today, Sheffield FC takes pride in being the world’s first football club.

Did you guess correctly?
