Azizul will be the first ride in the National Velodrome – Khairy Jamaluddin

We’re all inevitably still reeling in from the euphoria that national cyclist Azizulhasni Awang has achieved his lifelong of of being crowned world champion and receiving the rainbow jersey at the Keirin final in Hong Kong.

Azizul clinched the gold medal after defeating Colombia’s Fabian Puerta Zapata and Czech Republic’s Tomas Babek at the world championship.

Riding on the wave of excitement, Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin has announced the National Velodrome in Nilai is ready and that Azizulhasni Awang will be the first cyclist ride on it.

World cycling champion Azizulhasni Awang arrived at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport to a screaming crowd yesterday and Malaysians flocked to airport receive their national hero.

The National Velodrome in Nilai will be used for cycling events for the 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games come 19th of August, and who better to test the velodrome that our very own Pocket Rocketman.

Apart from that, in light of Azizul Awang’s victory, the Youth and Sports minister has urged for more corporations to invest in sports, specifically cycling. This will help to develop younger talent and lead to producing more world champions.

“We need more corporations investing in sports. Especially at the development level. Not only entering the frame after they win.” the minister tweeted.

The 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games will take place from 19th August until 31st August this year, with only 123 days left to go!
