Melaka United suffered an embarrassing defeat to Johor Darul Ta’zim last weekend at the Larkin Stadium.
The Southern Tigers netted a total of seven goals that night, thanks to a hat trick from Safiq Rahim, and goals by Amirulhadi Zainal, Gonzalo Cabrera, Gabriel Guerra, and Azammudin Akil.
Melaka, unfortunately, failed to retaliate at the Larkin and did not even manage to score one goal, much to misery of their fans.
Melaka’s team manager Datuk Wira Mohd Yusoff Mahadi expressed his frustration at the results, and even threatened to drop all four of their import players, including their head coach, Eric Williams, if this persists.
“We might consider dropping all four them. In fact, even Eric Williams might be sacked if he doesn’t make up for this by winning the next two games against FELDA United and PKNS FC.” Datuk Wira said.
However, Eric Williams does not think that it is entirely his fault that Melaka lost to Johor Darul Ta’zim. Instead he blames the players for not giving their best during the match, and for ignoring his warnings about JDT.
“I warned them [Melaka players] even before the match, I said JDT might make a comeback after 2 consecutive losses. But it looks like no one paid attention.” Williams told HMetro.
Eric Williams also urged his players to look back at their performance, and ask themselves if they really gave it their best, and if they are not even good enough be in the Super League.
Despite the dismal performance by his boys, Eric Williams is positive that Melaka can bounce back, and he will make sure that happens. He also assured the fans that this will not happen again.
“My job is to make sure every player performs at his best.”
“I have to make sure they bounce back and fight through the remaining of the Super League. It’s a challenging task, but I will try my best to make it happen.”
“We were punished by JDT, and it was an embarrassing defeat. I apologise to all the Melaka supporters, we will fix this for you.”
Melaka will face FELDA United at the Stadium Hang Jebat this Saturday, 15th of April.
