Injury stricken Goh Liu Ying will be replaced by younger shuttlers

Top national mixed doubles duo, Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying may not play together anymore.

Goh Liu Ying has been suffering from a shoulder injury since March, which took a toll on the pair’s performance at the Indian Open last month.

The duo also suffered an early exit from the 2017 Malaysian Open after losing to Indonesia’s Edi Subaktiar-Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja.

“I was in bad shape.” Goh Liu Ying told the media after the match yesterday.

“Peng Soon tried to cover for me as much as possible but it didn’t work. I need to get treatment. I’m sorry.”

Consequently, national mixed doubles coach, Chin Eei Hui, revealed that the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has plans to pair Chan Peng Soon with a different partner.

Although no names have been confirmed, Chin Eei Hui said they are looking at a younger player to replace Goh Liu Ying.

“We are looking at pairing Chan Peng Soon with a younger shuttler. It’s a good idea because Peng Soon will not have to sit out any tournament in case Goh Liu Ying is out on injury.” the coach told Berita Harian.

“And with his experience, he can also help to nourish and guide the younger players.”

“We are looking at younger shuttlers like Peck Yen Wei, and Cheah Yee See. They can rotate and take turns to play with Peng Soon in one of the upcoming tournaments.”

However, it’s not all over for Goh Liu Ying. Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying will play at the 2017 BWF World Championships in Glasgow, Scotland this August.

“We still believe in Liu Ying. She has played with a swollen leg before, and she gave it all she had in the game. We just want her to rest well, and in the meantime, we’re looking at thrusting our younger players into more tournaments.”

However, the coach added that BAM might resort to Chan Peng Soon-Peck Yen Wei for the impeding Russian Open, which will happen from the 18th to 23rd July.
