#MalaysiaOpen: Lee Chong Wei still going strong, top doubles teams out

The 2017 Celcom Axiata Malaysian Open was supposed to be a spring for our top seeds to bounce back after a lacklustre run at the Indian Open.

Unfortunately, the declining momentum carried on for national no 1 mixed doubles Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying. The pair had to bid farewell to the Malaysian Open after crashing out in the first round on Wednesday.

Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying won 21-18 against Indonesia’s Edi Subaktiar-Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja, but they failed to keep up and gave in 21-19, 21-17 in the second and third sets respectively.

Top doubles pair Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong were also sent packing after they were beaten 21-17, 23-21 by Hong Kong’s Or Chin Chung-Tang Chun Man.

Today’s fixtures (6th April) from 5 pm onwards

However, Malaysian badminton ace Datuk Lee Chong Wei is through to the second round of the Malaysian Open after beating England’s Rajiv Ouseph 21-16, 21-18.

Today, Datuk Lee Chong Wei will face Hong Kong’s Hu Yun. Hu Yun is fresh from victory after defeating Denmark’s Anders Antonsen 21-17, 19-21, 21-10.

Malaysia’s younger men’s doubles duo are also on to the second round after defeating Denmark’s sixth seeds Mads Conrad Petersen-Mads Pieler Kolding in the men’s doubles category. The Malaysian pair won with an impressive streak of 21-19, 16-21, 21-10.

Today, they will go up against China’s Fu HaiFeng- Zheng Si wei, and it will be a match we don’t want to miss!

The Celcom Axiata Malaysia Open 2017 is currently happening at the Perpaduan Negeri Sarawak Stadium from 4th April to 9th April 2017.
