Jin Wei dropped from Malaysia’s squad for Badminton Asia Championship

Seventeen-year old Goh Jin Wei has been deemed “not ready” for the upcoming Badminton Asia Championship.

The verdict was disclosed by Badminton Association Malaysia (BAM)’s technical director, Morten Frost Hansen, citing poor performance as the reason. According to Hansen, her performance at the recent Malaysia Masters Grand Prix in Sarawak was less than satisfactory.

Hansen further clarified that Goh is also currently in a rehabilitation program to regain her form and come back stronger. She has been quite injury-prone as of late. He also asserted that they are not permanently dropping her from the squad, just giving her enough time to recuperate.

The Asia Mixed Team Championships 2017 was scheduled to take place in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, between 14th and 19th February. Goh Jin Wei, who was supposed to play in the mixed doubles category, will have to sit this one out.

Goh will be replaced by another budding badminton star, Lee Ying Ying, who will be gracing the championship alongside her fellow athlete, Ho Yen Mei, for the women’s singles category.

“We did put her on the sheet, but based on her performance in Sibu, we think it’s best for her to take a break before going to Vietnam. She is suffering form some injuries, so we need to keep an eye on her. For now, she is undergoing physiotherapy, and we will be monitoring her progress.” Hansen told Kosmo.

“She should be back fit in two weeks. If her physiotherapist gives us the green light, then she can get back into action.” he added.
