Melaka United’s Khairu Azrin eyeing national team call-up

Melaka United midfielder Khairu Azrin Khazali, who is also fondly known as Acong, is eyeing a place in the national squad.

The 26 year-old is currently high on confidence, having scored during Melaka United’s 1-1 draw away against Selangor last Friday. His creative approach and hardworking style of play seems to have caught the eye of many, though the man himself wants to remain modest.

“There’s still a lot I need to learn if I want to be in action on the international stage, especially facing opponents who are much more mature,” Acong told Berita Harian.

“Of course as a player, it is my ambition to play while representing the country. But if fate isn’t on my side, I will accept it. However, I will still work hard to give it my all,” he added.

Acong was involved in PKNS’ 2016 FA Cup run to the final where they lost 2-1 to Johor Darul Takzim, before he joined newly-promoted Melaka last November – effectively ending his long stint with the Red Ants.
