Sports analyst, Prof. Emeritus Tan Sri Dr Khoo Kay Kim delivered a message to Youth & Sports Minister, Khairy Jamaluddin that he has to choose between being a minister and being the FAM president.
Kay Kim told Sinar Harian it will be difficult for Khairy to hold both positions considering the high level of commitment both positions need.
“In my opinion, as a cabinet member; Khairy is not suitable to be the FAM president. We need to have a president that is willing to give all their time and committed to fulfilling their duties,” said Kay Kim.
“So, with his schedule packed with political programs, can he actually carry out responsibilities while holding the position of FAM president at the same time?”
Kay Kim also said that the president needs to have a hardworking attitude and bringing up ideas to increase the quality of the country’s football.
Kay Kim has also advised Khairy to stick to his position as a minister due to the FAM not being the right stage for politicians and said that it’s best to give the presidency to those who is actually qualified.
Along with Khairy, the other candidates for the FAM presidency are the Tunku Mahkota Johor Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, Kelantan FA advisor Tan Sri Annuar Musa and former secretary general for the Minister of Home Affairs, Tan Sri Aseh Che Mat.
All candidates will have until 13 February to confirm if they are ready for the position.
The final list of candidates will be announced on 20 February before the voting will be held during the 53rd FAM Congress on 25 March.
