JDT 1-1 Kedah (4-5 on pens): Red Eagles clinch Charity Shield victory in Larkin

Kedah has been crowned the 2017 Charity Shield champions after beating 10-men Johor Darul Takzim (JDT) 5-4 on penalties. Both sides however shared the points after drawing 1-1 in normal time.

JDT dominated the majority of the first half and they almost took the lead after both Brian Ferreira and Gonzalo Cabrera both had great chances but they both shot narrowly wide on the 11th and 12th minute respectively.

Kedah struggled to attack and only had their first real chance after 30 minutes but Baddrol Bakhtiar’s free-kick was tipped over easily by Farizal.

With five minutes of the half left, JDT won a penalty after Syawal Nordin was adjudged to have fouled Ferreira and Safiq then converted the penalty strongly to give JDT the lead.

However, JDT ended the half a man down after S. Kunanlan got a second yellow after fouling Ahmad Fakri Saarani who was about to break free just outside the box deep into injury time following the JDT right-back being first booked earlier for a 27th minute challenge on Akram Mahinan.

Kedah started the 2nd half strongly but failed to conjure anything until the 63rd minute when Baddrol equalized with a smashing shot from outside the box just curling inside the JDT post.

While Kedah had the majority of the ball in the 2nd half, they failed to take advantage of 10-men JDT further as it ended 1-1 but the draw forced a penalty shootout to determine the Charity Shield winners.

Both sides scored all their penalties until Ferreira’s penalty was saved by Abdul Hadi Hamid and it fell on Liridon Krasniqi to convert the last penalty to silent the home crowd and allowed Kedah to bring home the Charity Shield.
