Former Secretary Genral of the Asian Football Confederation, Datuk Peter Velappan has suggested to the Football Association of Malaysia to introduce a salary cap for Malaysian League players.
According to Velappan, this is to prevent another financial crisis happening after what has happened to Selangor and Kelantan in recent months.
“I support the idea of a salary cap ceiling and the league should not have foreign players but rather we should our own players to play abroad,” Velappan told Sinar Harian.
In relation to the topic, Velappan mentions that state football associations should find another way to get income instead of relying on their respective state governments.
Velappan sees poor marketing strategy and a weak administration within the FAM as factors of the local teams’ financial troubles.
“Drastic changes within FAM and a new leadership are needed so that the league is run by professional bodies and not the FAM,” said Velappan.
The new season of Malaysian football kicks off next Friday with Johor Darul Takzim and Kedah facing off at Larkin Stadium for the Community Shield
