FIFA has decided that the World Cup will be expanded from hosting 32 teams to 48.
This idea was broached by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who said that the World Cup had to be more inclusive, and he wants to increase the number of team competing in the World Cup.
Infantino proposed a 48-team format, which means that there will be a total of 16 group, each group with three teams.
The new format will call for a total of 80 games, as opposed to the 64-game system that is currently employed.
FIFA members voted unanimously in favour of the change at a meeting in Zurich on Tuesday.
Despite being more inclusive, this move will also inevitably increase FIFA’s revenue, with about £521m in potential profit.
