Tennis star Petra Kvitova was gravely wounded in a break-in incident at her home on Tuesday night.
In an attempt to defend herself from the intruder, the left-handed Kvitova was stabbed in her left hand, her dominant and playing hand. However, she is lucky that the injury is not a life, or a career threatening one.
“What happened to me was certainly not pleasant, but it’s behind me,” Kvitova said in a statement on Czech Republic’s Fed Cup team’s Facebook page.
The Czech national was rushed into surgery immediately, where surgeons spent four hours working on her tendons and nerves on her left hand. Her spokesman has confirmed that the surgery went well.
The two time Wimbledon champion will not be able to play tennis for at least three months. This means that she will not be participating in the impending Australian Open next month.
Kvitova thanked everyone for their support and said that she is “shaken” but she will remain strong and fight back. Get well soon!
