Kelantan exit sparks massive scramble for Brendan Gan’s signature

Malaysian international Brendan Gan officially announced his departure from Kelantan FA yesterday as he took to Instagram to post an emotional tribute message for fans of The Red Warriors.

Gan, who is currently recovering from an ACL injury, was a key player for Kelantan throughout 2016, but the Red Warriors opted against renewing his contract as part of their plans to rebuild the entire team with youth.

As a result, the 28 year-old is now a free agent – something that has reportedly sent shockwaves across the Malaysian football fraternity. According to a source close to the player, approximately nine MSL teams keeping tabs on the former Sydney FC man.

“Nearly every club in the country is interested in Brendan. Let’s just say nine out of 12 MSL teams have expressed their interest in one way or another. He has also got offers from abroad,” the source said.

“But there’s plenty of time for Brendan to think and decide on his next move. He will not sign for anyone before the season starts. He’s a free agent, so he can sign for anyone at any time, as soon as he’s fully recovered,” the source added.

Brendan was heavily linked with JDT earlier this year, though their decision to sign Nazmi Faiz from Selangor seems to have cooled down the rumour. Now, the defensive midfielder is being linked with a potential move to the Red Giants, who are actively hunting after a replacement for Nazmi.

At the same time, Penang are also closely monitoring Brendan, with Ashley Westwood said to be a big fan of the Malaysian international. Felda United are equally interested in bolstering their squad, as they prepare for life in the AFC Cup next year.
