Mercedes Formula One driver Nico Rosberg has clinched his first ever Formula One title. The German bagged the No. 1 spot after beating his own teammate, Lewis Hamilton, by five points. Hamilton was aiming for his third Formula One title.
Rosberg started the Abu Dhabi race with 12 points ahead of Hamilton. Hamilton, who was already ahead of him, deliberately slowed down to try to shove Rosberg close to the Ferraris and Red Bulls; so he’d have the advantage.
Hamilton even got orders from the Mercedes team, telling him to speed up, but he told them that he was comfortable in the lead.
But despite the pressure and tricks played by Hamilton, Rosberg managed to emerge victorious.
What made the victory even sweeter is the fact that Rosberg’s father, Keke Rosberg, won the world title back in 1982, and his son won it 34 years later.
“It’s a childhood dream come true,” Rosberg said after the race. “Thank you for everything.”
Albeit all the drama, Hamilton and Rosberg were seen congratulating each other on the podium, as Rosberg is officially crowned the 33rd Formula 1 world champion.
