The construction of the class 1 National Velodrome in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan was brought to a halt when parts of its roof collapsed last Saturday.
The incident was clarified by Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar, who explained it is still being investigated by the Public Works Department (JKR).
“It was part of the framework that felled, instead of the whole roof. The roof is not installed yet as it requires steel for support.”
“Seven of the frameworks collapsed on 18 June. The whole matter is currently under the investigation of JKR’s forensics department and further explanations will be given by them,” he said.
Khairy further explained that he is not sure on the length of delay due to the ongoing investigations.
“It might be postponed for a month or more. However, it won’t disrupt our preparations for next year’s SEA Games,” he said.
This is not the first time a delay has happened for the construction of the velodrome and it was due to be completed by November, before the occurrence of the latest mishap.
RM80 million was allocated in Budget 2013 to build the indoor velodrome in Nilai.
