Datuk Lee Chong Wei, Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong and Vivian Hoo Kah Mun-Woon Khe Wei successfully qualified for the quarter-final of the BCA Indonesia Open in Jakarta yesterday.
The World No. 2, who was handed the honour of being the flagbearer of the Jalur Gemilang for the opening ceremony during the Olympic Games in Brazil, eliminated Angus Ng Ka Long after defeating the badminton player from Hong Kong 21-10, 21-13 in just 31 minutes.
Lee Chong Wei has won the Indonesian Open title five times in his career.
National men’s doubles Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong faced off against compatriots Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong and had to endure close calls in both sets to defeat the former world No. 1 pair 22-20, 22-20 in a match that lasted almost 40 minutes.
Women’s doubles duo Vivian Hoo-Woon Khe Wei spent three quarters of an hour bringing down Indonesia’s Nitya Krishinda Maheswari-Greysia Polii 21-17, 21-19.
Lee Chong Wei will face China’s Wang Zhengming in the quarter-final later today. Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong will be up against China’s Chai Biao and Hong Wei, whereas Vivian Hoo-Woon Khe Wei will meet another Indonesian pair of Anggia Awanda-Mahadewi Istirani.
