The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) are extending their full support to national badminton player Datuk Lee Chong Wei on becoming the flagbearer of the Jalur Gemilang during the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in August.
BAM deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Norza Zakaria said that the World No. 2 player is the best person to be given the honour because of all of his achievements, including winning two silver medals at the 2008 Olympic Games in China and 2012 Olympic Games in London.
“I will nominate Lee Chong Wei as the official flagbearer of the country during the Malaysian Olympics Council (MOM) meeting on Thursday,” Norza Zakaria said to Utusan Malaysia.
“The BAM are giving him the full support that he needs after considering his past achievements, experience and leadership qualities that will inspire the rest of the line-up.
“He (Chong Wei) should be the one that leads Malaysia,” Norza Zakaria concluded.
Pandelela Rinong was the flagbearer for Malaysia during the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
The MOM meeting will be held on Thursday and it is solely to decide the flagbearer.
The list of athletes that will be travelling to Brazil to participate in the Olympics:
Khairul Anuar Mohamad (archery); Mohd Azizulhasni Awang and Fatehah Mustapa (cycling); Ooi Tze Liang, Cheong Jun Hoong, Nur Dhabitah Sabri, Pandelela Rinong Pamg and Ng Yan Yee (diving); Khairulnizam Mohd Affendy and Nur Shazrin Latiff (sailing); Jonathan Wong Guanjie (shooting); Welson Sim (swimming); Nauraj Singh (track and field) and Mohd Hafifi Mansor (weightlifting); Lee Chong Wei, Goh V Shem, Tan Wee Kiong, Chan Peng Soon, Goh Liu Ying, Tee Jing Yi, Vivian Hoo Kah Mun and Woon Khe Wei (badminton).
