Uber Cup: Malaysia miss out on QF spot after second consecutive defeat

The Malaysian women’s badminton squad have almost certainly failed to qualify for the quarter-final of the Uber Cup after suffering a 3-2 defeat to Denmark earlier today.

There were a few changes made from the heavy defeat suffered against China on Sunday, such as Ho Yen Mei replacing Sonia Cheah as the third women’s singles entry, Woon Khe Wei partnering Amelia Anscelly and team captain Goh Liu Ying teaming up with Vivian Hoo.

Tee Jing Yi lost the first point for Malaysia when Line Kjaersfeldt won 21-11, 21-11 in only 33 minutes. Things went from bad to worse when the new partnership of Amelia Anscelly-Woon Khei Wei lost the second match to Christinna Pedersen-Kamilla Juhl 21-16, 21-17.

However, teen sensation Goh Jin Wei managed to earn a point to reduce the deficit when she remained victorious over Mette Poulsen after a 21-18, 21-13 scoreline. Goh Liu Ying-Vivian Hoo inspired the comeback after a gruesome match, which lasted more than an hour, that saw the Malaysian duo winning Maiken Fruergaard-Sara Thygesen 21-18, 22-24, 21-12.

Ho Yen Mei won the first set 24-22 in the final match against Anna Thea Madsen but suffered consecutive 21-13 scorelines in the second and third set to hand Denmark an important win.

The Uber Cup squad’s chances of qualifying to the quarter-final are close to nothing because a win for badminton giants China against Spain today will confirm Malaysia’s fate.

Malaysia will face Spain tomorrow at 8.30am in the last Uber Cup match.
