“We need to top our group” – Chong Wei tells teammates ahead of Thomas Cup

National badminton player Datuk Lee Chong Wei has stressed on the importance of winning their group in the Thomas Cup in order to get an easier pathway to the final

The two-time Olympic Games silver medallist, who is the captain of the Thomas Cup squad, said that it is important to win the first two games against England and Germany to ensure a place in the quarter-final before facing South Korea in the last group stage game.

“We have to beat England and Germany to qualify for the next round. When we face South Korea, all we need is a win to top our group,” Lee Chong Wei said as quoted by Berita Harian.

“It is important to win the group because we will avoid facing the winners of other groups in the last eight. If we fail to do so, our pathway to the final will be even more difficult.”

Son Wan HoThe group winners and runners-up will qualify for the quarter-final.

Datuk Lee Chong Wei will be joined by Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin, Chong Wei Feng, Goh Soon Huat, whereas the doubles include Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and Teo Ee Yi-Ong Yew Sin.
