The impossible has happened.
Leicester City, against all modern football odds, are the new English Premier League CHAMPIONS!
After their 1-1 draw against Manchester United, Claudio Ranieri’s men moved one step closer to the Premier League title. But Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Spurs, courtesy of Eden Hazard’s late equalizer, has effectively handed the title to the Foxes!
This will arguably go down in history as one of the greatest sporting stories ever. The Foxes battled relegation for large portions of last season, and only a late revival of form allowed them to remain in the Premier League.
But when Nigel Pearson was sacked last summer, pundits tipped Leicester to be relegated this year and the odds of them winning the Premier League was set at 5000/1.
Leicester though, regrouped under Ranieri and proved their critics wrong by getting off to a good start last August/September. As the season progressed though, it became evident that they were on the verge of something really big.
The 3-1 win over Manchester City was probably a major turning point. All of a sudden, Leicester were title favourites. But even then, there were plenty of question marks on their ability to handle pressure and keep their momentum going till the end of the season.
To their credit, it’s exactly what they’ve done as Ranieri’s men rallied through some difficult games to eventually clinch a historic triumph that will be talked about by generations to come.
