National high jump athlete Nauraj Singh became the newest Malaysian athlete to book his spot for the upcoming Rio Olympics, after winning the Singapore Open gold medal earlier today.
Nauraj cleared a height of 2.29 metres, which was enough for him to book a Rio slot. Better still, it was also 0.02 metres higher than the previous national record set by Lee Hup Wei.
His new national record was also 0.04 metres higher than his previous personal best of 2.25 metres.
His win in Singapore makes him the 13th Malaysian athlete to seal a Rio spot, following in the footsteps of athletes like Pandelela Rinong as well as Azizulhaswi Awang.
This also makes him the first Malaysian athlete to qualify for the Olympics on merit, since the trio of Lee Hup Wei, Rosalinda Samsu and Yuan Yufang accomplished it in 2008.
