Despite making history by emerging as runner-ups in the Dodgeball World Cup, the Malaysian contingent will not be receiving the SHAKAM (Skim Hadiah Kemenangan Sukan) incentive as a reward for their achievements.
According to Datuk Ahmad Sepawi Ismail, who is the Director of the National Sports Council (MSN), dodgeball isn’t a recognized sport under the Malaysian Olympic Council (MOC). In fact, the Malaysian Dodgeball Federation (MDF) is not member of MOC, as of now.
“It’s not that we don’t want to reward them but the problem is, they have to be recognized as a sport to be given the SHAKAM incentive,” he told Berita Harian.
“They are also not listed as a prestigious sport and the Malaysian Dodgeball Federation is not listed as a committee in the Malaysian Olympic Council,” he explained.
The Malaysian dodgeball team surprised the entire dodgeball fraternity by making the finals of the World Cup, where they succumbed to a 3-14 defeat against home favourites, England.
