The Indonesian men’s doubles pairing of Kevin Sanjaya Sakamuljo and Markus Fernaldi Gideon claimed their first ever BWF Superseries title after defeating counterparts Angga Pratama and Ricky Karanda Suwardi at the Siri Fort Sports Complex in New Delhi yesterday.
The World No. 17 pair took only 30 minutes to bring down the World No. 10 pair after beating them 21-17, 21-13 to clinch the 2016 Yonex-Sunrise India Open trophy.
“We were anxious before the game but we snapped out of it. We played Angga and Ricky before so we were prepared this time around,” Kevin said as quoted by Badminton Indonesia.
“We have won a Grand Prix title, a Grand Prix Gold title and now a Superseries title. This year is proving to be much better than last year,” Markus added.
The pair defeated Taipei’s Chen Hung Ling-Wang Chi-Lin and Malaysia’s Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong in the quarter-final and semi-final respectively to advance to the final. They also defeated Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong earlier this year in the Malaysia Masters final.
In the mixed doubles final, Indonesian pair of Riky Widianto and Puspita Richi Dili lost out to China’s Lu Kai and Huang Yaqiong 13-21, 16-21 in 40 minutes.
