Chances of a Rio berth could be getting tougher for professional badminton pair Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong but the two remain defiant of their hopes of securing a slot.
According to Boon Heong, junior rivals Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong are way ahead of them but the threat should not be seen as an obstacle to their dreams of playing in Rio this August.
“I think they’re way ahead of us but as a player, we cannot give up so easily,” said Boon Heong as quoted from Harian Metro.
“We will try our best to accumulate as many points as we can until May because there are still a few more championships left.”
Only one pair from each country is allowed to participate in the Olympics if they are ranked within the top 16. V Shem and Wee Kiong are currently ranked at no.14 whereas Kien Keat and Boon Heong stand at no.16.
Kien Keat and Boon Heong wil be taking on Japan’s Takeshi Kamura and Keigo Sonoda in their opening round of the Malaysian Open which commences this Wednesday.
