British Open 2016: Nicol David storms into quarters

Datuk Nicol Ann David, who is currently hunting for her 6th title at the British Open, proved that her desire for the title is still strong after she powered into the quarter-finals of the British Open earlier this morning.

Nicol, who is also ranked as the 2nd best squash player in the world, defeated Australia’s Donna Urquhart 11-4, 11-7, 11-6 in the second round of the competition which was held at the Airco Arena.

According to the official website of the competition, the 33-year old showcased exceptional performances in the first set, allowing her to snatch a comfortable win.

The second set was a closer battle as Urquhart recovered from her struggles in the first set, pressuring Nicol. Despite all that, the squash ace managed to secure a win on the 27th minute after ending the third set 11-6.

After the match, Nicol said, “All the girls are stepping up their games in each round which is exciting for the tour at the moment as we are all pushing each other but I’m really pleased with how I played today.”

“I felt like I was feeling the court better and I know I always have to play good squash on the day, and I’m happy to win 3-0 and have this amount of recovery.

“I came into this tournament as number two seed the underdog so I will give it my all and see where it takes me.”

Nicol will next face Egypt’s Omneya Abdel Kawy in the quarters.
