National squash ace Nicol David is off to a great start in the British Open as the Malaysian top seed successfully defeated Egyptian youngster Mayar Hani in the first round this morning.
Nicol won the match in three straight sets 11-8, 11-9 and 11-0 to obliterate the 19 year-old and book her slot in the following round.
Hani, whom pulled off a number of upsets in the qualifying round, initially led the first set 7-6 and 9-8 in the second set but was unable to surpass Nicol and advance further in the tournament.
“I was able to control myself in the crucial moments of the game. I worked hard to bounce back and win this,” said Nicol as quoted from Berita Harian.
“I need to be more clinical and play with a better pattern with the momentum I have.”
Nicol will be facing Donna Urquhart next as the Australian managed to defeat India’s Joshna Chinappa 12-10, 7-11, 11-9, 11-5.
“I need stay focus because right now I am no longer trying to retain the title but I am here to win the title all over again. I need to focus one by one. To beat Donna I need to predict her moves and that is not easy.”
