The local media was shaken up yesterday by badminton ace Lee Chong Wei’s unexpected first-round defeat in the All England Championship.
The news sent a shockwave to viewers all around the world as many expected him to make it to the main draw and even take home his fourth title. However, things got out of hand and all hopes came to an end when the former top seed was unable to tackle down India’s B. Sai Praneeth.
Despite the heart-piercing scenario, the defeat will not be disrupting Chong Wei’s road to secure his first ever gold medal in the Olympics. His dark past will soon be forgotten as the shuttler vows to perform much better and step up his game to bring the nation’s glory to greater heights in Brazil this coming August.
Coach Hendrawan stated that the viewers should have faith in Chong Wei as it is the outcome of the prestigious event that exerts greater significance.
“I hope that everyone still believes in Chong Wei because his main goal is the Olympics,” he said as quoted from Harian Metro.
“To me, the defeat today (yesterday) was not shocking because Sai Praneeth certainly played a lot better. His game play was extraordinary.”
Hendrawan also claimed that every first match of any tournament is always the toughest match for every player, including a top professional like Chong Wei.
“Not every player can manage a great start. Today (yesterday), Chong Wei was unable to give out his all and show his maximum capability.”
“Chong Wei and I will discuss and assess the defeat.”
Chong Wei was the All England champion in 2010, 2011 and 2014. He was unable to participate last year due to his doping scandal and suspension.
