All England: V Shem-Wee Kiong and Kien Kean-Boon Heong set up Malaysian showdown

National men’s doubles duos Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong and Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong have add it to the quarter finals of the All England championship but only one of them will advance further as the two pairs will be playing against each other today to book a slot in the semifinals.

Former doubles glory Kien Keat and Boon Heong pulled off a great upset yesterday in Birmingham by downing second seeds Mohamad Ansan and Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia. The two proved to be too powerful for the Indonesians and ultimately won 21-15, 15-21 and 21-17 under 49 minutes.

V Shem and Wee Kiong produced a stellar display moments later when they defeated fifth seeds Cai Biao and Hong Wei from China. The two Malaysians were defeated 17-21 in the first set but bounced back to dominate the following two intense sets 24-22 and 23-21 to carve their victory.

The stunning showdown managed to take the viewers’ minds off Lee Chong Wei’s unexpected defeat in the first round.

This will definitely be a match to watch as the two pairs are currently on a run to secure a slot in the Rio Olympics. Only 4000 points part, the intensity of the rivalry will be far more interesting.
