“I’m still waiting for FINA confirmation” – Amsyar Azman on Rio chances

National diver Amsyar Azman is anxiously awaiting news on whether he will be selected to take part in the upcoming Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil this August.

According to him, the International Swimming Federation (FINA) have not made a decision because the final list of 34 participants was supposed to be released last night.

“I have not heard any news regarding the list, which I think will be announced this week.

“My heart is beating fast and I hope it is good news,” he said as quoted by Harian Metro.

A month ago, Amsyar failed to qualify himself on merit for the Olympics after failing to end in the top 18 to get an automatic ticket to Brazil. The Perlis-born athlete ended the competition in 24th place at the FINA Diving World Cup in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

However, he may stand a chance to go to South America based on a quota.

If there are athletes who already qualified for the Olympics through the FINA World Aquatics Championships, the remaining slots will be filled up by the 19th-placed participant and so on.

WHAT DO WE THINK?

Somehow, if the 23 year-old gets a second chance by earning himself a ticket for the 2016 Olympics in Rio, Brazil, he will definitely not take it for granted. He knows the 3m springboard event well as he was only two dives away from gaining an automatic qualification. However, he tumbled down the ranks after a bad entry on his fifth dive. He has won two gold medals at the Southeast Asian Games for the 3m springboard category, in 2013 and 2015. He also helped Malaysia to a silver medal at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea, after losing out to the Chinese duo of  Cao Yuan and Lin Yue. The University of Malaya student has to work hard and believe in himself to stand a chance at winning a medal, because he has the potential to take Malaysia’s name to a great level.
