2016 LTdL: John Murphy upsets big names to win Stage Three

John Murphy of UnitedHealthcare (UHC) surprised everyone when he won the third stage at Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) today, ahead of Androni Giocattoli’s (AND) Francesco Chicchi and Southeast’s (STH) Jakub Mareczko.

The American cyclist finished the 107.2km race with a time of 2 hours and 30 minutes. The race started in Kulim, Kedah and ended in Kuala Kangsar, Perak.

James Oram of One Pro Cycling (ONE) and Terengganu Cycling Team’s (TSG) Goh Choon Huat were leading the peloton with 12km to go, but the former forged on with latter’s wheel.

Astana Pro Team (AST) rider Andrea Guardini finished just outside the podium in fourth place, retaining his Yellow jersey for General Classifications. He also regained his Teal jersey after Wang Meiyin achieved it yesterday, winning the Points Competition with 33 points.

Wang Meiyin of Hengxiang Cycling Team (HEN) is still dominating the Mountains Competition after a third successive win as King of the Mountain. He retained his Red jersey.

The best Malaysian rider of the day was Terengganu Cycling Team’s (TSG) Hariff Saleh.

Stage 2 winner Andrea Palini suffered a flat tyre with 30km to go, but sprinted on to the bunch within 10km to go to finish in tenth place, behind Italian rider Paolo Simion.
