That a wrap! All constructors have officially finalized their teams and what a delicate surprise from Manor Racing this year as the English suit managed to recruit the only Asian driver of the season- Rio Haryanto.
Haryanto, born and raised in the humble city of Surakata, Indonesia, became the only Asian racer of the season since Japan’s Kamui Kobayashi in Caterham two years ago. The driver also done his nation proud as he made history by being Indonesia’s first ever racer in Formula One.
The 23 year-old, whom replaced Will Stevens, will be joining German young gun Pascal Wehrlein this season to make amends for Manor’s pointless season last year.
In fact, the Indonesian has quite an impressive resume and fan base in his homeland. Haryanto won the Formula BMW Pacific in 2009 and made a great impression when he scored three winning races in the GP2 last year.
However, this is not the first time Haryanto has driven for the constructor. In 2012, when Manor was still donning the brand Marussia, he and GP2 series team mate Max Chilton tested for the suit at Silverstone.
“Manor Racing is a team with an exciting vision and ambitious plans,” Haryanto said as quoted from The Guardian.
“They have produced a great package and I can’t wait to get in the car. Melbourne will be a huge moment for me, my country, supporters and fans and I want to thank everyone who’s been with me since I started in single seaters; 2016 is my chance to reward that faith and represent Asia in F1.”
According to Manor Racing owner, Stephen Fitzpatrick, Haryanto can be described as a rather tenacious individual.
“We are delighted to announce Rio as our second race driver for 2016,” said Fitzpatrick.
“Rio’s been racing since he first got into a kart at six years old. He’s tenacious on and off the track and made a big impression on last year’s GP2 battle.
“Rio’s huge following in Indonesia is great for the team and for F1. They are keen to see him on the grid and we’re confident that we’ll see him enjoying some exciting battles in the year ahead.”
Manor has failed to achieve a points-finish since the late Jules Bianchi in the 2014 Monaco Grand Prix. With Haryanto and Wehrlein on the run, Manor definitely proposes some potential competition.
The season will be kicking off in Australia this upcoming March 20. Are you all excited to see what the South East Asian pride can bring to the table?
