Nike terminates Manny Pacquiao’s contract over homophobic slurs

Manny Pacquiao’s endorsement contract with Nike has been terminated after the boxer made some horrific comments about gay people.

“We find Manny Pacquiao’s comments abhorrent,” Nike made a statement last night, as reported by Berita Harian.

“Nike strongly opposes discrimination of any kind and has a long history of supporting and standing up for the rights of the LGBT community.

“We have ended our relationship with Manny Pacquiao,” they added.

Manny Pacquiao, a member of the House of Representatives in the Philippines, said that gay people are “worse than animals.”

“It’s just common sense. Have you seen animals of the same-sex mate with each other?

“Animals are better because they can differentiate between male and female. If you have male-to-male or female-to-female relationships, then people are worse than animals,” Berita Harian also stated.

However, a few hours after his interview, Manny Pacquiao apologized on Facebook, saying: “I’m sorry for hurting people by comparing homosexuals to animals. Please forgive me for those I’ve hurt. I still stand on my belief that I’m against same-sex marriage because of what the Bible says, but I’m not condemning LGBT. I love you all with the love of the Lord. God Bless you all and I’m praying for you.”

Despite his apology, Nike, Wonderful Pistachios and Nestle have opted to terminate his contract.
