Datuk Santokh Singh feels that the football players from today’s generation care more about making money than defending Malaysia’s honour.
The former national team defender said that he does not believe in the young players representing the country today.
“I do not go to watch football at stadiums because I have no faith in the young players,” he said, as reported by Sinar Harian.
“To be completely honest, they are not playing for pride or honour, but for the money. Therefore, I am not exactly happy with this situation,” he added.
The ex-Selangor player has constantly advised young players to change their mindset when they go to the field.
However, he did not deny them quality they possess, but the level of discipline must be improved in order to advance and make a name for themselves.
“The quality of the players are there, but do they know how to use it wisely?
“I think they have a future in terms of international football. They just need to up their discipline if they want to succeed to a higher level,” he concluded.
Datuk Santokh Singh played alongside Mokhtar Dahari, Soh Chin Aun, R. Arumugam and was part of the team that qualified to the Moscow Olympic Games in 1980, though he never featured in the finals of the tournament (boycott of the Games by Malaysia).
