#RIPDaveMirra – BMX legend found dead in apparent suicide

BMX biker Dave Mirra was found dead in a vehicle on Thursday afternoon, in what police are investigating as an “apparent suicide.”

He was 41 years old.

According to the Greenville police department in North Carolina, Dave Mirra was discovered sitting in a truck with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He had been visiting friends in the area a short time before the incident.

“We mourn the loss today of a great friend and wonderful human being who touched the lives of so many around the world with his gift. He called Greenville, North Carolina home and was as humble a guy talking with kids on a street corner about bikes as he was in his element on the world stage. A young life with so much to offer was taken too soon,” said City of Greenville Mayor, Allen Thomas.

Dave Mirra once held the record for most X Games medals, and has medaled at every X Games from 1995 to 2009. He finished his career with 24 total medals, 14 of which were gold. In 2005, Mirra won the Best Male Action Sports Athlete ESPY Award.

Professional skateboarder Tony Hawk, paid tribute to Dave Mirra on Twitter.

May your soul rest in peace.
