Muangthong United are through to the Asian Champions League play-offs after triumphing on penalties against Johor Darul Ta’azim earlier today.
The Thai side went into the game as major favourites, but a spirited performance from JDT, coupled with an outstanding display from Farizal Marlias dragged the game into the extra-time, with the score-line being 0-0.
Despite Teerasil Dangda being introduced into the game in extra time, Muangthong could not find a way past the JDT defensive set-up ad the game edged into spot-kicks.
Just as the away fans were beginning to manifest hopes of seeing their side sneak a surprise win, Muangthong goalie Kawin turned on the style and saved three consecutive penalties from Jorge Diaz, Marcos Antonio as well as Hariss Harun to seal their spot in the next round.
Muangthong will now face China’s Shanghai SIPG at the Shanghai Stadium, next week.
More to come…
