Youth champion Goh Jin Wei has successfully passed the hurdle to make it to the main draw of the Indian Open Grand Prix Gold yesterday.
The 15 year-old badminton prodigy gave herself an early birthday present in the Babu Banarasi Das stadium when she defeated both the host players in two straight sets. Jin Wei took on Riya Pillai first and outplayed her easily 21-10, 21-6 in the opening round. Luck was on her side when she managed to win over Gadde Ruthvika Shivani 21-14, 24-22.
Jin Wei will be facing Indonesia’s Fitriani Fitriani in the official first round of the tournament.
The shuttler, whom secured her title in Peru last year, intends to make her debut in a GP Gold event memorable and vows to give her best shot to improve her world ranking.
Joining Jin Wei in the main draw is mixed doubles duo K Yogendran and Prajakta Sawant, whom ousted India’s Vinay Kumar Singh and Riya Mukherjee 21-16, 21-15 in their first qualifying match and followed by their second victory over India’s Brijesh Yadav and Sraddha Tiaari 21-6, 21-16.
The pair is slated to mean French pair Ronan Kabar and Emilie Lefel next.
