Malaysian Masters: Chong Wei cruises into third round

National top seed Lee Chong Wei is one step closer to achieving his dream of securing a hometown victory after his triumph in the second round of the Malaysian Masters Grand Prix Gold held in Penang.

The badminton ace managed to provide a grand atmosphere yesterday in the Spice Arena when he easily defeated Thailand’s Kantawat Leelavehabutr in two straight sets 21-6, 21-15 to book his slot in the third round.

“I didn’t really encounter tough opponents in the first and second match. I’m still trying to get use to the court and find my rhythm,” said Chong Wei as quoted from Berita Harian.

“This is the first time playing in a major tournament held in my hometown so I will do my best.”

The 33 year-old Penangite is aiming for a fourth title in the championship, following his consecutive successes in 2009 to 2012.

Meanwhile, Malaysian men’s doubles duo Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong also managed to advance to the next round as they won over Chinese powerhouse Liu Xiaolong and Qiu Zihan in a rather intense match with results 22-20, 21-16.
