Former world number one Lee Chong Wei has urged his fellow hometown residents to show their greatest support for him as he seeks to win the Malaysian Masters title in Penang.
He is through to the second round of the competition, having dispatched Indonesian Fikri Ihsandi Hadmadi 21-14, 21-15 earlier today.
Born in Bukit Mertajam, the 33 year-old is keen to bag his fifth Malaysian Masters title this season, following his success in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012
“The last time I played here was during my youth. I have never played in such a major tournament that was held in my home town and I also have never won any major tournaments here so this is very special to me,” said Ching Wei as quoted from Berita Harian.
“I hope the audience will fill the stadium completely to give me their support. I promise to do my best and win this championship.”
“Even though I am the main player in this tournament, I still don’t wish to underestimate anyone of my opponents. I don’t want to think a lot and I hope to focus one match at a time.”
