National track cyclist Azizulhasni Awang has ceased his chances of triumphing in the Hong Kong World Cup series as he was handed a setback after ending the series with a disappointing note.
Azizulhasni, whom was excluded from training due to a flu last month, did not display his best performance as he was defeated by Australian Patrick Constable in the very first round of the men’s sprint event. Constable managed to lock in 10.448s to clinch the ultimate win.
“Despite the early exit, I have achieved my mission today (yesterday) when I was crowned as the top two fastest cyclists in Asia during the qualifying round,” said the 28 year-old as quoted from Harian Metro.
“The championship in Hong Kong is a great pathway for me to prepare or the upcoming Asian Cycling Championhip (ACC) in Japan. I hope for a better result in the ACC.”
Compatriot Mohammad Shah Firdaus Sahrom, whom underwent a collarbone surgery not long ago, failed to advance to the first round in the keirin event as he stood at no.35 in the qualifying rounds.
Fatehah Mustapa secured her spot at no.11 in the women’s keirin event after bowing out in the semifinals, whereas Jupha Somnet only managed to collect a total of 26 points after finishing the women’s omnium event. Overall, she was placed 28th among the 33 riders that competed in the series.
