Former national men’s singles badminton player Ismail Saman believes that a chance should be given to Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin to shine bright in the Thomas Cup.
Ismail, whom represented Malaysia in 1996 and 2000, thinks that Iskandar’s performance last year was completely outstanding and thus he would definitely be worth the Thomas Cup slot.
“I think it’s fair that Iskandar was given a chance. He has achieved the standard level of the game,” said Ismail as quoted from Harian Metro.
“There’s just a few weaknesses that need to be overcome, such as agility and he needs to react fast on the court.”
“Overall, I think Iskandar is capable of being in charge on winning in a team event.”
Ismail, whom was Iskandar’s coach during in Petaling BC during the Purple League, admitted that the 24 year-old shown great improvements so far and also believes that he will be able to step up his rank to reach the top 30, as per request from the technical director of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), Morten Frost.
“Even though he’s only no.51 in the world rankings, I think he’s levelled with the top 30 standard players.”
“Which is why I believe he will be able to improve his rank this year.”
