World Championships: Amelia-Soong pull off stunning upset

Malaysian women’s doubles pair Amelia Alicia Anscelly and Soong Fie Cho sent shockwaves across the badminton world after they knocked top seeds, Misaki Matsutomo and Ayaka Takahashi out of the tournament.

Amelia and Soong went into the round as the obvious underdogs but they did not let that affect their mental state – showcasing terrific amount of confidence in the first set to win it 21-15.

The Japanese pair however, bounced back and exhibited reasons as to why they are the top seeds of the tournament to win the second set 21-12.

At this point, most individuals would have crumbled but Amelia and Soong kept pushing at it and eventually sealed 21-14 win to effectively complete the victory and book their spot in the quarters of the World Championship.

This victory comes as a relief for Malaysians after a frustrating day in which Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ling were knocked out of the mixed doubles, while Zulfadli was sent packing in the men’s singles category.
