All England Championship: Arif Latif sent packing in qualifiers

Malaysia’s only hope for a men’s singles representative in the All England Championship has been knocked out of the competition during the qualifying stages.

Independent shuttler Mohd Arif, who came in to the qualifying round as the only Malaysian in the men’s singles, was sent packing by Indonesia’s Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka with a 18-21, 21-15, 21-18 defeat.

National No.2 Chong Wei Feng withdrew from the competition due to a leg injury while, independent shuttler Zulfadli Zulkifli withdrew at the very last-minute, on Sunday, due to a viral fever. And with Arif being knocked out, that leaves Malaysia with no representatives in the men’s singles.

Similarly, national shuttler Payee Lim Peiy Yee has also been knocked out after suffering a 14-21, 8-21 straight sets defeat against England’s Fontaine Mica Chapman.

However, Malaysia will be represented in the main draw by mixed doubles shuttlers Tan Aik Quan-Lai Pei Jing, women’s doubles shuttlers Amelia Anscelly- Soong Fie Cho and Woon Khe Wei-Vivian Hoo and men’s doubles shuttlers Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong.
