Exclusive: Don’t compare Guilherme with Rangel – Shahrom Kalam

Selangor skipper Shahrom Kalam believes that it would be redundant for fans to compare Guilherme de Paula with Paulo Rangel, claiming that both players have different playing styles.

Paulo Rangel was hugely successful with the Red Giants last year, finishing the Super League season a top scorer with 16 goals, but his departure to Terengganu led to the acquisition of Guilherme, who hasn’t exactly settled in just yet.

The 28 year-old has struggled for goals thus far and only managed to open his Selangor account last weekend, though Shahrom Kalam believes that any form of comparison between him and Rangel would ultimately be counter productive.

“We have never compared existing players with players who have left the club,” he told FourthOfficial.com

“All we focus on is working together as a team and ensuring that the team attains success. Guilherme is a different player but he works hard for us. Obviously, a striker’s role is to score goals so we certainly hope he’ll starting doing that regularly after netting the equalizer against Felda the other day.

“He definitely deserves it because he works extremely hard during training, and even during matches,” he added.

After a difficult start to the season, Selangor secured a morale-boosting win over Felda United last weekend, to knock the league leaders out of the FA Cup. The win certainly comes as a timely boost for the Red Giants and Shahrom feels that it will only spur them towards greater heights within the league.

“It was a massive morale boost for the players, I won’t deny that. We have to improve in every game and we definitely did that against Felda. Our first four games have been difficult ones as we’ve faced teams with good foreign players.

“But either way, every team takes a decent amount of time to get settled in and start gaining traction, so hopefully, this win gets us back on track,” he added.
