Third seeded Andrea Petkovic won the WTA Diamond Games unchallenged as Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro withdrew from the finals due to a neck injury.
“I woke up in the morning and I felt this pain in my neck,” Suarez Navarro told AFP. “I couldn’t play like I wanted. So I had to pull out of this final.”
Petkovic did exceptionally well in the semi-finals when she defeated the unseeded Barbora Zahlavova Strycova with a 7-6, 7-6 victory in just 2 hours.
“You can never really enjoy the win when you don’t fight for it.” Petkovic told FoxSports. “I had a great week and I’m leaving as the champion, but definitely mixed emotions.”
However, the fans did get to witness some action as four-time Grand Slam Champion Kim Clijsters took on Petkovic in an exhibition match at the WTA Diamond Games, in which the 31 year-old defeated the new champion with a 5-3 win.
This unchallenged victory marks her sixth WTA Tour title, and it also boosted her world ranking from number 12 to number 10.
