National cycling icon Azizulhasni Awang had to settle for a silver medal in the men’s sprint event at the ongoing 2015 Asian Cycling Championships (ACC).
Azizul secured the gold medal in the keirin race event and he was hopeful of becoming the first cyclist to break the record of securing two gold medals at the ACC by winning the sprint.
However, Japan’s Tomoyuki Kawabata proved too good for the 27 year-old, as he defeated him to claim the title, though Azizul himself was gracious in defeat.
“The competition was very tight in the third round when I was narrowly defeated at the finish line.” Azizulhasni told Harian Metro. “The competition in Thailand has been hard, especially with wind conditions and uneven surfaces.”
“I am a little disappointed but I’m still satisfied that I managed to provide a strong challenge. As of now, my attention would switch towards the World Track Champiosnship in Paris next week.”
