Serena Williams cements top spot in WTA world rankings

World tennis queen Serena Williams has extended her lead on top of the WTA world rankings after securing a sensational Australian Open triumph over Maria Sharapova last weekend.

After beating the Russian in straight sets, the 19-time Grand Slam champion gained an additional amount of 1,500 points, meaning that she is now on top of the rankings with 9,776 points.

Sharapova comes in second place with 8,210 points while Simona Halep from Romania occupies third spot with 6,571 points.

Meanwhile, Serena’s older sister, Venus Williams boosted her rankings from 18th spot to 11th spot after making it to the quarter finals of the Australian Open.
